Innovation Rate Chart
How does the Innovation Rate chart in the Quality tab differ from the By Output and By PR views, and what does the category breakdown show?
What it shows
The Innovation Rate chart shows the percentage of engineering work that goes toward net-new product development, features, versus maintenance, bug fixes, and operational overhead (KTLO). It can be viewed by Output (complexity-adjusted value) or by PR count, and broken down by category and subcategory. The chart tracks whether AI coding investment is shifting the work mix toward innovation or toward faster execution of the same maintenance treadmill.
Why it matters
Innovation Rate is the strategic ROI question expressed as a code metric. If AI is genuinely freeing engineers from routine maintenance and bug fixing, Innovation Rate should rise over time as AI adoption grows. If it stays flat or falls while total output rises, AI is making engineers faster at the same mix of work, useful, but not the capability expansion that justifies multi-year AI investment. CEOs and CTOs need this number to answer the board question: is AI changing what our engineering team can build, or just how fast they build the same things?
The Larridin angle
Larridin's By Output view of Innovation Rate is more accurate than By PR because it weights each unit of work by complexity, a feature PR and a typo-fix PR count equally in a PR-count view, but very differently in an output-weighted view. The category and subcategory breakdown makes it possible to identify which types of work AI is genuinely displacing and which it isn't yet touching.

Common questions
What does the Innovation Rate chart measure?
The Innovation Rate chart measures the percentage of engineering work dedicated to new product development versus maintenance, bug fixes, and operational overhead.
How can the Innovation Rate be viewed?
The Innovation Rate can be viewed by Output, which adjusts for complexity, or by PR count, and can be broken down by category and subcategory.
Why is the Innovation Rate important for executives?
The Innovation Rate helps executives assess whether AI investments are leading to more innovative work or merely speeding up existing maintenance tasks, which is crucial for strategic ROI decisions.
How does Larridin's By Output view differ from By PR count?
Larridin's By Output view weights work by complexity, offering a more accurate picture than the PR count view, which treats all work units equally regardless of complexity.
