Mass Exodus from ChatGPT | Times of India

Written by Floyd Smith | Mar 24, 2026

There's a rapid user exodus from ChatGPT. The exodus is attributed to three causes. The first is a controversy between Anthropic and the US Department of Defense over terms for use of Claude. Anthropic insisted on protections against the use of AI for monitoring civilians and for automated weapons use against people. The Pentagon dropped Claude over the dispute; OpenAI moved in to fill the gap. This has caused users to quit ChatGPT in protest.

Additionally, an effort called QuitGPT has begun. Again, US political concerns are involved. An OpenAI executive made a political contribution to a MAGA Super PAC supporting President Trump. Also, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) uses a resume screening tool powered by OpenAI's ChatGPT-4 model.

And finally, Claude has shown success within business accounts to a greater degree than OpenAI, which has been more successful with individual users. Together, these three trends have contributed to a sharp drop in ChatGPT usage, with Claude moving into the lead in the enterprise.

The report cited numbers from Larridin describing a 15x increase in Claude usage in enterprise accounts, with Claude driving twice the number of sessions in corporate settings.
