Zeen Rachidi, writing in The New Stack, conducted a deep dive on how to make sure that AI agents are owned. He cites research by Larridin as he describes how unowned agents are spawned, shows how to find them, and describes policy changes to prevent unowned agents from appearing in the first place.
In showing the extent of the problem, Zeen cites a recent article from Larridin, AI Agents Are Operating in Your Business Right Now. The article shows that initial scans by Larridin, like those recommended in the article, turn up an everage of 47 orphaned agents; that is, agents wiht no current owner.
This serves as an object lesson as to what happens when infrastructure isn't ready to ensure accountability for every agent created. Excess costs, security exposures, and wasted effort are among the likely results.
